OpenPisteMap offers a geolocated advertising platform designed to allow businesses operating within the snow holiday industry target new customers cost effectively and to provide useful information to the end users of the map.

Advertisements displayed to OpenPisteMap users are selected based on the area of the map the user is viewing. As the user pans around the map, the adverts automatically update to show relevant information to the user, such as hotels, ski hire, ski schools and restraunts.
Advertising is chosen in two phases: primarilly, businesses located within the user's viewing window are selected. Advertisements selected through this primary criteria are allocated to the first display slots. If there is still space, a secondary selection criteria is used in an attempt to fill it - businesses within a certain radius of the centre of the user's viewing window are selected. The radius used for the secondary selection is chosen by each advertiser themselves to, for example, cover the area that they service.
Each advertiser sets a maximum cost per click (CPC) for each advertisement. Each time the advertisements are displayed, automatic generalised second price auctions are used to choose the advertising slots. The "bids" used in this auction are based on the maximum cost per click as well as the historical click-through rate for that advertisement.
As mentioned above, two sets of advertising are selected using different criteria. Each set is auctioned independently.
Advertisers are only charged when a user clicks through to their website. However, since the historical click-through rate is used as part of the auction, advertisers should choose advertisement text and the geolocation radius carefully.
